Greater Manchester Urban Area

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Greater Manchester Urban Area is an area defined by the Office for National Statistics centred on the large conurbation surrounding Manchester in northern England.

Although based loosely on the Greater Manchester county, the Urban Area does not include parts of Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, but does include some settlements which are outside of the county boundaries, such as Wilmslow, and thus should not be confused with the same region as the Metropolitan county by the same name.

According to the 2001 census the area had a population of 2,240,230.

[edit] Constituent parts

The Greater Manchester Urban Area is made up of the core metropolitan districts of the City of Manchester, the City of Salford, and the boroughs of Bolton, Oldham, Stockport, Rochdale, Bury, Tameside and Trafford.

Wigan, in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan is by ONS definitions separate from the Greater Manchester Urban Area, although other parts of the wider Wigan-Borough are included. Wigan, with Ince-in-Makerfield forms a separate Wigan Urban Area; the gap is formed between Ince (of Wigan U.A.) and Hindley (Greater Manchester U.A.).

Other urban areas, in particular Glossop and Golborne are also only narrowly avoided.

According to the ONS definitions the Greater Manchester Urban Area consists of the following settlements:
