Great Northern Tunnel

The Great Northern Tunnel is a one mile (1.6 km) railway tunnel under downtown Seattle, Washington, completed by the Great Northern Railway in 1905. King Street Station is just south of the southern portal. At the time it was built, the tunnel was the highest and widest in the United States at 28 feet high (8.5 m) and 30 feet wide (9.1 m). Freight and passenger trains use this tunnel today, including the Amtrak route "Empire Builder" and Sound Transit's Seattle-Everett "Sounder" commuter train.
