Great Lakes Institute of Management is located in Chennai, India. Kick started in 2003 from a concept of providing world class business education, Great Lakes took its first batch in April 2004. It comprised of 120+ students from various fields and backgrounds and industry experience. The institute aims to provide a comprehensive and consise course of business readiness to keen young minds.
Great Lakes is founded by Dr Bala V Balachandran, the J.L Kellog Distingusihed professor of Accounting & Information systems in Kellogg School of Management in Northwestern University, Chicago, USA.

The edifice of Great Lakes is built around a single theme that shapes all its strategies, policies and plans — it is called customer-centricity. Great Lakes defines "customer" to include all its beneficiaries — the students who receive the best and most practical business education, with emphasis on the honing their entrepreneurial potential; the world of business, industry and commerce whose need for managerial talent of the highest quality is met and the top notch faculty and staff that provide such an educational experience. We also add value to this customer-centricity with meritocracy and quality.

- Provide world-class management education in India in an atmosphere of freedom, while adhering to strict academic standards in research and teaching;
- Communicate and implement a strategic vision of business, technical knowledge and a global outlook by bringing together distinguished scholars from the world's most reputed institutions;
- Focus on the education and continued development of business leaders and, in particular, senior management;
- Place special emphasis on human, cultural and ethical aspects of the business profession.
The course spans a one year time frame that includes project work, assignments and exams. The entire year is split into terms which require a necessary set of credits to clear the entire course. There are compulsory credit courses as well as optional courses that can be chosen once the specialization is picked. The regular speacializations being Marketing, Operations, HR & Finance. Students are encouraged to take part in inter collegiate competitions and also a lot of support is extended from the institute to allow courses of indipendent study. Here students are allowed to write papers and articles on various management topics.
There is a small percentage of permanent faculty and many a time that is seen as a unfavourable position, however, the institute has deftly used this to bring in more experienced faculty as visiting faculty including from leading business schools of the world.
The guest lecture palate has also seen many a personalities come and speak, right from the field of politics to business to entertainment.
