Talk:Graving

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Uhhh. First, this is merely a stub. Give it a chance. Second: Ask the thousands of gravers in existence if their hobby is a "neologism". {Bubbha 07:17, 12 December 2006 (UTC)} Strike-through text

To dismiss the widespread practice of "graving" simply because the word does not yet appear in the dictionary seems specious. The main literal meaning of the word neologism is a new word, or the coining of such. Before last year, words such as Blog did not appear in any dictionary, but I defy anyone to demand the removal of those entries on such grounds. BenightedEyes 03:54, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

We're not dismissing the "practice." We're dismissing the word. It's a newly made-up word, and Wikipedia isn't the place for newly made up words (see: WP:NOT). If it grows some legs, then this article might be appropriate. Rklawton 05:29, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
In what country is this term used? I have never heard it used in UK genealogical circles. Verica Atrebatum 08:50, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
The term is used frequently in, for example, the forums on the site FindAGrave.com, and has been for several years. The people using the term are mostly from the US, Canada and the UK. If you're dismissing it on the basis of the word, could you suggest a more appropriate term to categorize this practice under? (Cemetery transcription, perhaps, but graving covers a wider scope.) Otherwise, please give it a chance (this is the second deletion notice for this page I've had to battle off). Several people have already participated in fleshing out the page. As for neologisms, "truthiness", for instance, has its own page. {Bubbha 09:48, 17 December 2006 (UTC)}
