Talk:Grand Lodge of Massachusetts
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Good job Vidkun! An inspiration to myself, & I hope to others! I know little about Mass GL, or I'd help. I guess I'll get crackin on CO... Also, suggest maybe in the future putting these pages, while in the development-stage, (to be deleted w/it's creation of course), under "List of Masonic Grand Lodges/(future article name)", to possibly help with collaboration? - I'm not sure what you mean, Grye, if you could give me an example here? Not saying it's a bad idea, I'm just not able to visualise what you mean. I already have it linked under the List, and changed that link from an external link to a wiki link to this article.--Vidkun 03:42, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
- Sure. Sorry if I was a little vague (& it might be a bad idea anyway. I've been known to have 1 or 2..;~)
- While working on these GL pages, we could create them under List of Masonic Grand Lodges at, say for Mass, List of Masonic Grand Lodges/Grand Lodge of wally world. Add a link to it from the talk page, & presto-we have a workspace. I say this mostly out of (my perhaps warped) logic, but also because although I knew you were working on this, for some reason it was impracticle to watch progress there on your pages. - Here's what I have done - made a subpage for the project List_of_Masonic_Grand_Lodges/Grand_Lodge_of_Massachusetts. Does that work for you?--Vidkun 14:47, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Third Oldest?
First: Great article Vidkun! I only have one question... you say that GL Mass is the third oldest Grand Lodge (after GLE and GL Ireland). I would think that the Grand Lodge of Scotland would be older. Not so? (I am not contradicting your statement ... just curious). Blueboar 19:57, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- GLMA takes their date of origin from the date of the warrant to Joseph Price to be Provincial Grand Master, 1733. Similarly, UGLE, which came around in the early 1800's, claims its birth year as 1717. GLoS was 1736. Statements made on the GLMA webpage list it as the third oldest.--Vidkun 20:06, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Interesting... It actually does make sense as the early lodges in Scotland did not particularly like the whole idea of Grand Lodges. Do you know if the Ancients chartered a provincial GL in Mass. and if so when? Blueboar 00:36, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

- Yes and no. From the histories I have read, the GLoS Chartered Lodge of St. Andrew in 1756. This decision to form another Lodge was apparently made in a similar vein to the rift between "noble" Moderns and "working class" Ancients, and the GLoS is referred to as an Ancients GL, like the "Atholl" Grand Lodge of Ireland. See List of Masonic Grand Lodges/Grand Lodge of Massachusetts for the ongoing project and notes.--Vidkun 13:34, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
