I think something should be put in about the spat with Gower. It is ironic that Gooch passed Gower as England's top run scorer, given that he was instrumental in ending Gower's career prematurely. Read Matthew Engel in 1993 and Peter Hayter in 1994 Wisdens for the contemporary strength of feeling in favour of Gower and against Gooch for those actions.
