[edit] History

Grayson was born in Dacia in 325 with the name Claudianus. He grew up as a warrior and fought in many battles. Around the year 365, Claudianus died in battle, fighting the invading Goths, and became Immortal. Darius, the general of the Goths and one of the most powerful Immortals at the time, took him under his wing and turned him into a powerful warrior. He changed his name to Grayson and became second-in-command of Darius's armies.

Around the year 500, while leading the Goths at the gates of Paris, Darius beheaded a holy man, who at the time was the oldest living Immortal. The Quickening changed Darius, who became a peacemaker. Darius turned his armies away and became a priest. Grayson saw that act as betrayal to him and their cause, and developed a hatred for Darius. However, since Darius started living in a Paris church, which was holy ground, Grayson could not kill Darius.

In modern times, Grayson became a wealthy arms merchant, a role he may have had a great deal of history with. (It is implied by Grayson in the speech before his final battle with MacLeod that he was the one who first turned gunpowder into a weapon.) He figured a way to get revenge against Darius by killing everyone Darius cared about in order to get Darius off holy ground and take his head. In 1993, in Paris, Grayson, living under the alias of Paul Grayson, killed a protégé of Darius in front of Darius's church. Darius, watching the events, wasn't pleased and tried to convince Grayson to stop what he was doing. Grayson, however, told Darius he would keep doing what he was doing until Darius stepped off holy ground to face him. He then said his next victim was going to be a mortal named Victor Paulus, a man of peace like Darius and another of his protégés.

Paulus was currently in Seacouver, Washington, so Darius sent Duncan MacLeod, who was yet another protégé, a warning about Grayson. Duncan was able to foil two attempts by Grayson to kill Paulus and challenged Grayson. Grayson was not interested in killing Macleod because he thought MacLeod to be a great asset, who could be a powerful ally. But Duncan was determined to stop Grayson and, after preparing himself to fight "one of the old ones", sent a message to Grayson to meet him at a sulfur factory, where they would fight. After a long fight, Grayson was defeated and Duncan took his head.

In the season 3 episode They Also Serve, several members of the Watchers who are all participating in a poker game at Joe Dawson's blues bar state their surprise at Duncan MacLeod's victory over such a superior opponent. Indeed, Grayson was the most powerful opponent MacLeod had faced at that point, and one of the few Immortals he expressed fear and doubt over having to battle.

[edit] Grayson in The Game

Despite being one of the most powerful evil Immortals at the time of his death (one of the "old ones"), Grayson's interests did not seem to be focused on winning The Game. His interest in destroying Darius was purely personal, and he sought an alliance with MacLeod rather than a duel to the death, even though all parties involved seemed to think Grayson would have been the more likely victor. However, Grayson did say to MacLeod, "...there are not many like you left...I've killed so many."
