Grandy's Country Cookin' is a quick-service restaurant chain based in Lewisville, Texas. They specialize in fried chicken, country fried steaks, and catfish, with fresh-baked biscuits, dinner rolls, and cinnamon rolls. Grandy's also serves breakfast. Often their female employees will have a "grandma" appearance.
Grandy's was founded by Walter E. Johnson and Rex E. Sanders, who became friends while working together as teenagers at a Dallas cafeteria. After launching and selling a successful chain of restaurants, the two young men created Grandy's in 1973, hoping to combine the efficiency of fast food with the ambiance of a full-service restaurant.
During the 1980s Grandy's enjoyed its greatest success, having at its zenith almost 200 stores. However, in the 1990s the chain experienced a major downturn, pulling out of all of their major markets except Oklahoma City and Dallas. They also retreated from entire states, such as Arkansas and Missouri. In addition, most of their Texas stores outside of the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex were also closed.
Grandy's is currently franchised in nine states, with 72 restaurants. Their remaining locations are mostly clustered along the I-20 corridor in northeastern Texas. Their second strongest presence can be found in southwestern Indiana.
