Grand Canyon Unified School District

The Grand Canyon Unified School District #4 is a school district located on 1 Boulder St., Grand Canyon Village, Arizona 86023, 928-638-2461. It is believed to have the only K-12 school that is located inside a US National Park.

The district operates under the leadership of superintendent Sheila Breen, J.D. and principal Bob Kelso (as of 2003) and five school board members.[1]

Students in grades K-12 attend school on a campus with six buildings. The school has a four day week, and students in grades K-5 attend school from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the 2006-2007 school year. Students in grades 6 - 12 attend school from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The district has adopted the Discovery and International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme and Middle Years Programme with a student count of slightly more than 300 (K-12).

The mascot is the Phantom.

On July 10, 1911 the first school in the Grand Canyon opened. In 1916 the first county-funded schoolhouse was built, which still exists. Four years later a Parent-Teacher Association was formed.[2]
