The Gaita group Gran Coquivacoa was created in 1968 by “Bocachico” Petit, Nelson Suárez, Rody Tigrera, Pedro Arteaga and Manolo Salazar, in the Ambrosio district of Cabimas, Zulia state). In the 1969 season the singer Nelson Martínez enter to the Gran Coquivacoa rows, he became the leader singer of this group in the 60´s and 70´s, with his tamboreras, and gaitones, like ¨El Gran Gaitón¨ (1969), ¨Tamborera number 7¨ (1977), ¨Tamborera number 9 ¨ (1979), Los Vasallos, La Traidora, Gaita a Tambora, and many others.

In 1975, Neguito Borjas enters to Gran Coquivacoa, in 1978 he composed Sin Rencor, one of the most popular gaitas ever, and that song was one of the pioneer love gaitas, Neguito in 1979 went to the United States to study, in the 80´s he returned to Venezuela, and since that he became the leader singer of the group.
