It is a false cognate with Old English geottan (or yettin in Modern English), an antiquated word for an orc or troll (see also jotun). In the Sherpa language, Yeti means "creature of the glacier". Migoi or Mi-go (pronounced mey-goo) is another Sherpa (?) name for such a creature, as are Mirka, Kang Admi, and Meh-Teh [I don't understand the "eventually"—clarify please. And I don't understand "which is the name given to the snowman by Sherpas", since you seem to have just been giving a whole string of Sherpa names for the Yeti. The Yeti is the snowman, isn't it?Please consider the reader's ignorance.]

Oh, right, I see you never did say Howard-Bury coined the term. I thought it was an odd thing to say! Somebody assumed that was what you meant and changed it. Yeah... that's the underside of the wiki system all right. People catch sight of one sentence and assume they can improve it, without looking at the context. (And some of them will be mortally offended if you change it back, no matter how apologetically.) Sigh... sometimes I wonder about the whole system.
