Goulburn-Oberon Road
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Goulburn to Oberon Road is a New South Wales country road linking Goulburn near the Hume Highway to Oberon. The road is designated as Main Road 256.
At its northern end, the road passes through imposing plantations of pine trees that supply the sawmills of Oberon.
It is mostly sealed, having undergone extensive work in recent years. There are two sections of the road that remain unsealed. One section of around 5km long is located between the Abercrombie River and the end of Wombeyan Caves Road and is not apparently planned for sealing. The other section of around 10km long is located north of the Abercrombie River and has been undergoing roadworks since late 2005 in preparation for sealing was partly sealed but not finished as at September 2006.
In conjunction with O'Connell Road from Oberon to Bathurst, this scenic route provides a leisurely and surprisingly direct route between Bathurst and Goulburn.
The Wombeyan Caves Road, leading through the Wombeyan Caves reserve and on to Mittagong starts at the locality of Richlands, around half way between Goulburn and Oberon. The Laggan-Taralga Road from Crookwell ends in the historic town of Taralga a little further south. The Bannaby road to the locality of Bannaby also starts in Taralga.
There is a proposal to create an external Sydney Bypass, which would use the Goulburn to Oberon Road, requiring completion of sealing and probably some widening and realignment.
