Gottschalk, Prince of Vends, (Latin Godescalcus) (d. June 7, 1066), son of Udo, Prince of the Abrodites, established a Slavic kingdom on Elbe in North-East Germany. The kingdom was destroyed by Bernard II, Duke of Saxony and land given to Ratibor. Gottschalk was later employed by Canute the Great to fight with Norway. After Ratibor's death he returned and reestablished his kingdom. Gottschalk sometimes considered saint for christianizing Slavs. Died in a religious uprising.
