Gossip Stone

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gossip Stones, or Sheikah Stones, from The Legend of Zelda series, are gray, stone-like objects that can be struck with various weapons in order to reveal the current in-game time. When the Mask of Truth is worn, the Gossip Stones (as the name suggests) reveal small pieces of gossip, usually taken from an overheard conversation. There are some interesting facts the player can learn from the stones in this manner, especially secret information about characters in the games. Many of the in-game items, such as bombs and magic arrows, can affect the stones in odd ways. The effects thus produced are semi-cartoonish, and distinctly different from the usual time recitation or gossip quips. Gossip stones were originally made by the Sheikah, and it is for this reason that the symbol of the Sheikah people is etched into the front of each stone.

[edit] Appearances

These stones first appear in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and return in Majora's Mask. In The Wind Waker, gossip stones return as small, rare pendants that can be used to communicate at a distance. These advanced gossip stones were created by Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule. Such a pendant is used by Tetra and The King of Red Lions to communicate with Link in that game.

While the gossip stones reveal the current time and gossip tidbits in the games, many players have hypothesized other possible reasons for their existence. Some have attempted to use the stones to acquire the pieces of the Triforce, since that standard Zelda element was missing from both Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. These theories have not proven accurate, and it is probable that the stones are only present for the two aforementioned purposes.

The Gossip Stones make a reappearence in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, as the howling stones used to summon the golden wolf.
