Gork and Mork

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gods of the Orkoid species in the Warhammer 40,000 and Orc in the Warhammer Fantasy fictional universes are referred to only as Gork and Mork. Often, which one is being referred to is ambiguous and the action is stated to be the work of Gork (or possibly Mork).

The differences between the two deities in Warhammer 40,000 are slight: One hits you while you aren't looking, and one hits you while you are. They are also generally separated as follows: One is mean, and the other is meaner. Which one of the two gods is the first and the second is a source of much debate and conflict among their worshippers, and a considerable number of wars between Orks have been fought over that topic. In the Warhammer Fantasy universe of the Old World, the difference is more delineated with Gork being the god of strength (a popular phrase among Warhammer Fantasy enthusiasts is "Gork SMASH") while Mork is the god of cunning and is associated with magic. However, there are still some spells associated with Gork (including the favourites of many Orc players, the Foot of Gork and Gork's Warpath, which brings Gork to step on the enemy).

In Warhammer 40,000, the Orkoid species is believed to be a product of ancient genetic engineering to make them the perfect warrior race, and thus the deities they worship are beings dedicated to war. Both Gork and Mork are believed to help individual Orks in battle, but which deity an individual Ork chooses to worship seem to be of little consequence in the larger scheme of things.

In the Games Workshop wargame Gorkamorka, Orks are divided into 'Gorkas' and 'Morkas', depending on which god they worship. The difference is summed up as follows: "Gorkas are brutally cunning, and Morkas are cunningly brutal."

Another rarely known use for the term "Gork" can be found in the description of the lost follower of the deity Gork himself. This twisted, sad, and bloatedly hideous creature roams the earth in search of feeding grounds. While typically silent, those who have been fortunate enough to encounter Gork and survive have recounted chilling tales of the mating and feeding calls of the ever-evasive Gork. Many travellers who have gone insane from their contact with Gork have had complete emotional scarring and are only capable of repeating the guttural curses that haunt their minds to the end of their days. "No Gemes..." "-Het..." and the most cruel: "Educashiunul purputhes..." The human mind is incapable of understanding the deep, ugly evil that emanates from this creature. No further documentation is available.
