Gonzo photography
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Similarly to Gonzo pornography, Gonzo Photography refers to images and photographic attitude where the photographer takes an overt part in the scene by introducing his/her body, either by touching the subject or by being the subject himself or herself rather than being a passive observer. Gonzo photographer cannot remove himself from the subject he/she investigates as it is a deliberate and voluntary choice. This approach also underlines the impossibility to be really objective in reportage, and visual expression. But the intention of this is also to involve the audience in the scene direct from the photographer's perspective. Gonzo Photography has virtually no editing, frequently employing a scribbled notes style and a very basic technique and low profile photo hardware (pocket cameras, single wide lens, no gadgets and add-ons). Like in gonzo pornography, gonzo pictures are often bizarre. Zoldan King is recognized as a master of gonzo photography. Many pictures of Terry Richardson, a pure gonzo, as well show his natural inclination for gonzo photography.
