[edit] Stats
Gomora, a 150-million year old dinosaur, is from the Johnson Islands (a South Seas island, different from Johnson's Island). He is 40 meters (132 feet) tall and weighs 2,000 tons. Having the same height as Ultraman, Gomora is extremely powerful. His massive body has dark brown skin, has huge horns on the sides of his head, a small horn on the nose, rough plates down the front torso, and a thick, powerful tail. Gomora has the power to burrow underground. Hence, the name "Gomora" was derived from "go mole". (Many have assumed that he was named after the ancient biblical city, Gomorrah.)
In the US English-dubbed version, Gomora was renamed "Gohora".
[edit] History
Professor Nakatani, aided by Science Patrol member Arashi (acting as his guard), goes on a scientific expedition to the Johnson Islands. They discover that the legendary monster Gomora is still alive, and Nakatani decides to bring the still-living monster to a museum for the World's Fair. The Science Patrol agrees to do this task, despite the utter illogic and danger of bringing a living monster to a largely populated city. Before the monster attacks them, Arashi tranquilizes the monster with the UNG Dart, and the Patrol airlifts the monster via nets with the Jet VTOL. However the Monster awoke an hour early due to atmospheric changes between the island and the mainland and stuggled to the point where the VTOL's had to release the nets, thus causing the monster to fall two kilometers to the ground. Enraged, Gomora goes on a rampage on Mount Rokkô (where he landed), and Ultraman, who came to the rescue, was unable to stop the monster, and was beaten, much to everyone's shock. Even worse, somehow in the fight, the Beta Capsule is knocked free from wherever its stored in Ultraman and its retrieved by a kid nicknamed the Monster Prince due to his fascination with monsters.
When Gomora continued his rampage, Ide (Ito) of the Science Patrol uses the powerful Mars 133 gun, which he invented to counter the second appearance of the Baltans. He uses it on Gomora, succeeding in severing his tail. But the monster burrows under the ground in retreat, and later pops up by Osaka Castle. The Patrol is ordered to save the castle at any cost, however Gomora smashes the castle. As the monster pursues Ide and Arashi, the child returns the Beta Capsule to Hayata. Hayata tells the kid to run and hide then uses the Beta Capsule to transform back into Ultraman. Ultraman saves the day, and Hayata rewards the Monster Prince by giving him his communicator-insignia and tells him to study hard and not obsess over monsters.
Like many other popular monsters, Gomora returns on many occasions to battle other Ultramen.
[edit] Shock of the Week
Revered as the only monster strong enough to get a two-part episode in the original Ultraman series. Supposedly the big news of the week amongst the shocked children of Japan was that Ultraman had lost a fight! (Source(s): [UK500], p. 126).
Another Shock Item that shouldnt be ignored is that the Science Patrol willingly agreed to transport a living, dangerous monster to an inhabited city so that it would be on display at the World's Fair. Also of shocking note was that they only planned to sedate and transport the monster with no apparent thought given to how it would be contained and subdued after arrival.
