Gombak
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gombak is a district within the state of Selangor, Malaysia. The district was created on February 1, 1974, the same day when Kuala Lumpur was declared a Federal Territory. Until 1997, Rawang was the district capital; the capital has been moved to Bandar Baru Selayang. Gombak borders the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur to the southeast and the district itself is well connected to the capital. Both Gombak and Kuala Lumpur, along with several other districts in Selangor, are situated within the Klang Valley.
Gombak is administered by Selayang Municipal Council or Majlis Perbandaran Selayang (MPS) in Malay language.
The Batu Caves are located here as well as the national zoological park, the Zoo Negara while the International Islamic University Malaysia has recently moved its campus to Gombak. The Royal Selangor Pewter operates here. Gombak is also notable as the home of an aboriginal Orang Asli settlement, and it is the site of the National Aboriginal Museum, Orang Asli Museum.
Gombak River is a river that merges with the larger Klang River in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting place of the two rivers is the birthplace of Kuala Lumpur. At the center of the confluence is the Masjid Jamek.
