[edit] Shock images
What policy did they break? I don't understand how you can have an article about shock images without pictures of the images. A picture is worth 1000 words. Anyway the Goatse article had 2 pictures of the "temple of goatse" from some stupid computer game, surely a picture of the actual Goatse is more relevant.

[edit] Road map
Hi Golbez and many tanks for the compliments. Its nice to know that my work has inspired someone. I used Illustrator for the map. I tried my hand at inkscape and found it a little cumbersome, but its prolly developed now. But i do recommend using illustrator or corel draw, if you want to work really fast, especially for huge networks like that for the US. You do have the advantage that maps are readily available for tracing, unlike for India where i had to use a little close to a gazillion sources and put it all together like a giant hair-tearing jigsaw. Its not the perfect way to spend your free time, but the end result is well worth it. All the best to ya and drop me a line if you get into a tight spot. cheers -- PlaneMad|YakYak 18:00, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- Use the pencil tool to draw the lines. for the double stroke, just select your line, and in the appearance dock, choose add new stroke. Do this two times with the first stroke broader than the second and use different colors and youll see what i mean -- PlaneMad|YakYak 01:40, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
Fantastic Job Golbez!! Regarding your query, its really simple. Just follow these steps:
- Make sure all the roads are within a single layer.
- Click on the target icon for this layer (looks like a circle). This will select the entire network.
- In the appearance dock, do the same thing as before for the double stroke (the target icon will turn solid)
What this does is treat all the roads as a single object and apply the stroke, not individually as is the case now, where one highway overlaps another. And any line you draw in this layer automatically inherits the stroke, no need to select it seperately.
If this doesnt work, the individual styles may be conflicting with the layer style, to fix this click to the right of the layer target icon, which selects the contents of the layer, and then clear the stroke. Happy insane mapping-- PlaneMad|YakYak 15:46, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Howdy
I wandered into the discussion debate on Afghanistan through a strange, circuitous route. It started with Luna Santins talk page (posting a response) to KB Botany's talk page, and then the Afghanistan talk page itself. Botany just really sounded hapless and beleagured, which is why I followed the trail in the first place.
I've spent the last two hours reading the Afghanistan talk page (well, most of it). It gets EXTREMELY technical, but based on what I read, I urge you to reconsider your indefinite block on NiserKand. He has some mistaken beliefs, but and he has made more than a few inflammatory remarks, but he has also contributed positively to other articles (if his user talk page is any indication), and it appears that the net effect of his efforts has been to actually make the Afghanistan article more neutral. At least that is the opinion of a few of the editors on the Afghanistan talk page.
I would also like to point out that Tajik made the first accusation of racism against NiserKand. I don't know how to copy a diff, nor do I believe I could find it in the history, but I could point out the general area on the talk page if you asked me.
I think if he were strongly disabused of the notion that his self-stated "expert" knowledge made him more qualified to edit than other people who are willing to read, discuss, and collaborate, he could be a very helpful editor.
Up until tonight, I had little interest in Afghanistan and knew next to nothing of the subject. In other words, I have no dog in this race. I just felt it necessary to bring this up in the interest of fairness
If you would like to respond me, please use my user talk page.
Thanks for your time,NinaEliza 10:59, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for your response
I understand your position. I don't believe NisarKand has an email address attached to his account, but I also hadn't confirmed my own email at that point so I will try again.
One thing that is important to point out (as I learned from the talk on Afghanistan) is that "Aryan", doesn't mean the same thing in Afghanistan as it does, say, to the Aryan Nation. Arya or Aria was an ancient name for that entire region. The "rats" comment was way out of line, but it came after a lengthy, bitter debate and in my opinion was designed to specifically piss Tajik off. In the mean time, Tajik constantly called NisarKand racist in response to nearly everything NisarKand said. It's all over the talk page.
From what I understand, there are some serious human rights violations currently going on against the Pashtuns (that's what NisarKand is). While it's been alluded on the talk page, I don't know anything further. I think this makes the whole thing particularly sensitive to NisarKand, as well as Tajik.
Ironically, on the very same talk (one would need to scroll WAY up) is a fantastic, easy-to-understand, and compassionate summary of the dilemma. I'll edit it down to the most salient points, but it's still a bit long. Forgive me, and I appreciate your patience in advance (italics are mine for emphasis):
"Afghanistan has hardly ever been a single country. It does not even completely represent a people as such, since the Pashtuns are almost evenly split between Afghanistan and Pakistan, Tajiks between Tajikistan and Afghanistan and Uzbeks with Uzbekistan. A census has never been taken, and various pieces of land has belonged to different people. In addition, almost no one can be considered indigenous of the land, due to non-stop invasions throughout the history...
Afghanistan for most of its history has been a collection of loosely-connected tribes, most of which lived quite autonomously...Afghanistan could never be seen simply as a 'nation' or country of a 'people'. The name 'Afghanistan' was coined by a Pashtun at a time when many other ethnic groups lived autonomously within the region...
...The demographics and history of Afghanistan are therefore highly disputed. Percentages of population are very frequently overstated, each ethnic group claiming 80% of the population is not uncommon. The population also fluctuates with the movements of the large number of refugees...
While the history of smaller ethnic and religious groups are lost, historians in Iran, Turkey, Pakistan etc constantly view Afghanistan as a part of greater 'Turkistan', 'greater Persia' and so on. This makes the history of the country highly biased and unreliable, and it should be viewed as such...
On the other hand, the various peoples secured their own history better, the history of Pashtuns are best read from a Pashtun perspective, Hazaras from Hazara perspective, Tajiks from Tajik perspective, and always with a grain of salt.
This makes the history very interesting, but very difficult to dig up."
So what's to be done? KP Botany often criticized both parties (in an amazingly neutral, constructive way), but was ultimately of the opinion (along with a couple of other people) that the article as it stood was too biased towards the Tajik POV, and that NisarKand's contributions were welcome and important (though his "welcome" contributions usually had to be sifted through loads of overwhelmingly contested stuff).
I realize this is WAY more information than you ever wanted on the situation, and I promise this will be by far my lengthiest post to you. I just felt a little bit more background was necessary (and we all learned a little!).
In any event, I realize your very busy actually being productive here, so... NinaEliza 05:02, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
- Youz a brave man, Golbez, for jumping into this fracas.
- Actually, no. The probability is mighty close to 1 that both Nisar and Tajik have relatives from the other ethnic side through intermarriage, a very common practice in Afghanistan--probably even aunties who'd slap them both right across their faces for the way they've represented Afghanistan on Wikipedia. And make them apologize to you for having the decency to take at least one of them to task for completely unacceptable rudeness. They've both contributed usefully to Wikipedia, and both greatly tarnished the sense of community necessary for an endeavour of this nature.
- I'm studying, on and off, the ethnography of census taking in Central Asia and will correct population reports from Afghanistan to include opposing viewpoints and explanations of the reality of census-taking in Central Asia, eventually. It's an interesting topic and will enhance Wikipedia's usability to include information of this nature. Until then, when things cool down a bit, I will tag articles, as necessary to reflect their lack of neutrality with an appropriate explanation.
- I know you know you did the right thing in this situation. KP Botany 17:33, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- Whoever claims that NisarKand has done "good contribution to the Afghanistan article" has NO idea what he is talking about. Despire the fact that he NEVER provides ANY reliable sources for his claims (it seems like User:KP Botany is not interested in sources), he actively deletes authoritative scholarly sources (Britannica, Iranica, Encyclopaedia of Islam, Cambr. History of Iran, etc), and he actually humiliates himself by claiming that Pashtuns were the first people in space, the Pashtuns invented nuclear technology, and that Pashtuns are gifted with intelligence and power, while others are "rats".
- Instead of supporting such a nonsense, people should try to educate themselvs by reading actualy scholarly articles about Afghanistan.
- The names "Persian" and "Persia" ARE mentioned very often, because until not so long ago, the region of today's Afghanistan was part of "Persia". Even now, the Persian language as well as the Persian language are dominant in Afghanistan (all scholarly sources, as well as CIA's factbook, agree on this!)
- This may be hard for NisarKand or KP Botany to understand or to be accepted, but this is the truth and - most important of all - it is supported with scholarly sources (see the article).
- I really do not know what KP Botany is up to, but he is very certainly not an expert on Afghanistan. I rather trust scholarly articles, and Wikipedians who are actually specialized on Central Asian history, such as User:Sikandarji.
- Tājik 03:20, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- Again Tajik embarks upon personal attacks, "Whoever claims that NisarKand has done 'good contribution to the Afghanistan article' has NO idea what he is talking about." Now Tajik claims I "have no idea what [I] am talking about."
-
-
-
- As I also claimed in the same sentence that Tajik has "contributed usefully to Wikipedia," and Tajik gives me no credit for this (not a partial idea of what I am talking about, but "no idea") it appears that Tajik is essentially asserting that Tajik, too, has made no useful contributions to Wikipedia.
-
-
-
- This is a personal attack and has nothing whatsoever to do with Wikipedia--Tajik has been warned about personal attacks and has recently been blocked for being uncivil.[1] And he continues to be uncivil, here is calling calling another editor's claims "stupid."[2] This is simply no way to come to an agreement on an issue, calling other claims stupid. What one does is discuss and debate the other claims.
-
-
-
- There is no requirement on Wikipedia that only experts in their areas contribute, and, in fact, Tajik has not established his credentials as an expert, or as an editor able to distinguish between varying sources. Tajik quotes no Wikipedia policy about limiting Wikipedia to experts or scholars, as there is none. He is welcome to propose this policy, though. There are, however, many Wikipedia policies and guidelines against edit wars, personal attacks, being uncivil, and harassing other editors.
-
-
-
- This continued lack of civility on Tajik's part, even after being blocked for 24 hours for his lack of civility, his continued personal attacks, and his inability to engage in discussions on issues of content are tedious.

[edit] Thanks, I think...
THAT comment I never saw. I will say however, that when NisarKand first came on the the Afghanistan talk page he was civil and apologetic for making a crapload of undiscussed edits (which as you know a lot of new users do). I actually don't think he'll be back, but you never know. Anyway, thank you - that was a generous thing to do. I was more concerned about KP botany anyway. He is an active and prolific editor that got caught in the middle of a bitter and contentious battle, and he has gotten nothing but crap for it. I honestly think he's on the verge of splitting, which would be tragic. Hopefully, this gesture will cheer him up. Best Wishes and thanks again,NinaEliza 07:07, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

I understand why you might delete those remarks. However, I think it's better to respond to someone in a stern bu non-accusatory way to indicate what they may be doing wrong. Hi. I'm Ral315, editor of the Wikipedia Signpost. We're doing a series on ArbCom candidates, and your response is requested.
- What positions do you hold (adminship, mediation, etc.)?
- Why are you running for the Arbitration Committee?
- Have you been involved in any arbitration cases? In what capacity?
Please respond on my talk page. Your responses would be added immediately, and you and other late-entering users would be noted in Monday's issue as well. Thanks, Ral315 (talk) (my votes) 00:56, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portfolio for ArbCom
On Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2006/Summary table, I added a column "Examples" with links that exhibit a candidate's arbitration skills. My motivation is that as a voter, I don't want to just rely on a candidate's words, but also see their actions. Moreover, I believe a portfolio of "model cases" to remember in difficult situations can be useful for each candidate, as well.
So far I have entered examples for the candidates who registered first (from their questions page), and I'm not sure if and when I will get to yours, so you may want to enter an example or two yourself. — Sebastian (talk) 05:29, 4 December 2006 (UTC) (I stopped watching this page. If you would like to continue the talk, please do so here and let me know.)
[edit] Judgment
I'll be honest -- there was nothing particularly striking in your history, but you support Kelly Martin for ArbCom. In my view, this is an automatic disqualifier for any candidate, because either 1) you haven't been paying attention to the wiki much; 2) your ability to judge other people's interactions is gravely flawed and/or 3) you must support some truly horrendous wiki-policy positions.
It may not normally be considered ethical to oppose someone based on whom he supports; but, as Geogre rightly points out, Ms. Martin is an extraordinary case. It was Jimbo who recommended open voting, and I have the right to act on the basis of information attained therefrom, especially in a case where I do feel the evidence indicates a severe problem. Best wishes, Xoloz 16:30, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
- I should add that I also took note of your recent 3RR. Xoloz 16:32, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
- Your "witnesses" are not at all impressive, as I made no effort whatsoever to hide the reason for my opposition. That you wear your support for Ms. Martin as "a badge of honor" confirms my impression that your judgment is severely flawed. This is not a military campaign, you know. Best wishes, Xoloz 16:43, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism
Hey, sorry to bother you, but a user named "Baristarim", keeps vandalizing the article Nochiya Tribe. He most likely does this because he is a Turk who denies the Genocide that was done by his people to the Christians of his empire. He keeps marking the article Nochiya Tribe, and all sites linked to it as "No Refrences", even though there are refrences. Thanks --A2raya07 16:09, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- Wrong.. Please watch for civility, don't assume and keep the accusations to a minimum. The only reason I am marking that article is there are not enough references. I have dropped the ref tag, and put an OR tag instead. If you would like, please take a look at the article. This user has also created many articles that have absolutely no sources or about towns that do not exist. I have pointed this out to him with a post to his talk page. If you wish, you can contact other admins that know me to ask them if I am a "filthy genocide-denying vandal".
- I will ask you (A2raya07) again to watch for civility. The article doesn't have neccessary sources and is not written with a formal encyclopedic tone. Simple. I just launched the Wikipedia:Greek and Turkish wikipedians cooperation board, so spare me the nationalist accusations. There won't be any articles about non-existent towns, or without sources. [edit] Assistance with article
I was hoping you might be able to assist. A user keeps adding a "spamlink" back to the Asheville page. I removed a large number of external links as per to make the list more in line with WP:EL. This user is insistant upon adding a link that, in my opinion, has an excessive number of advertisements (17+). The user has tried to add the link back by using Sock Puppets. It would seem like there's something "in it" for this user (i.e. is he affiliated with the site or one of the advertisers?). He also feigned adminship in a post on my talk page, "warning" me against removing the link. So far he/she has used Rlph wiggins, Conspireagainst and Clarke187. ++ Arx Fortis 23:13, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
