The Podgorica Airbase (also known as Golubovci Airbase) is an active airbase in Montenegro. The airport is located near Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro. Also nearby is Montenegro's main international airport, Podgorica Airport. It is/was? the home to the 172th Aviation Brigade. It is a main flying training base for the JRV - primary and basic pilot training.
[edit] Use of Runway
The 08/26 runway the airbase uses is unused by civilian planes. It shares Podgorica Airport's the main runway with Podgorica Airport. It is barely marked and is only 15 meters wide. It mainly served as a connection between the main runway and Šipčanik Hill, which doubles as an underground aircraft shelter. The Šipčanik Shelter got seriousely damaged during the 1999 NATO bombings. It is going to be converted to a wine cave by the Plantaže company. It is unclear what will be of the 08/26 runway. With Montenegro's independence (June 3, 2006), it is expected that military activities will be further reduced on Podgorica Airport.
