Golden Shoulders is a musician's collective from Nevada City, California. Formed in 2001 by songwriter Adam Kline, the group has featured significant contributions by such notables as Joanna Newsom, who sang and played piano on the first Golden Shoulders album, Let My Burden Be, before going on to international acclaim; Kyle Field (Little Wings), Neal Morgan (Brightblack), Todd Roper and Greg Brown (Cake, Deathray), Rich Good (the Pleased), Dan Elkan (Pocket for Corduroy), Josh Klinghoffer (John Frusciante, Vincent Gallo, Beck, PJ Harvey), Rusty Miller (Jackpot), Rob Kieswetter (Bobby Birdman) and more. A complete list of contributors can be found here. This rotating cast and the accompanying stylistic restlessness has naturally led to an organic sense of variety from performance to performance, and recording to recording.
The Golden Shoulders FAQ gives this account of how the band got its name:
Adam had the idea that his next band would be break-up proof and consist of himself and everyone standing near him at any given time. The search for a name was long and painful. The Ivy Four was considered. As was the Tiny Band. As was Golden Industries. Remembering that dear friend and constant inspiration Kyle Field toured with the Microphones, Karl Blau and Bunkbed on a tour called the Golden Shoulders Tour, Adam asked Kyle if the new band could steal the tour name. Kyle consulted the other involved parties and a total of none of them had a problem with a band called Golden Shoulders starting up.
Golden Shoulders has released two albums, Let My Burden Be and Friendship is Deep, and one EP, Kin.
