Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet, also known as the Golden Gate Quartet, was formed in 1931 in Berkeley, Virginia. The quartet blended scat singing and dramatic narrative story lines to excellent effect. Its members were Robert Ford, A.C. Griffin, Willie Johnson, William Langford, Henry Owens and Orlandus Wilson.
During the years of World War II, The Gates recorded several patriotic songs for Columbia's Okeh Records such as "Coming In On A Wing And A Prayer" and "Stalin Wasn't Stallin'." In 1940, Langford left to form a new group, The Southern Sons, and Clyde Riddick took his place. Johnson left for the Jubilaires in 1948, and Owens departed in 1950 to become a preacher. They toured Europe in 1955, finding a new audience for their music there. In 1959, they emigrated to Paris, France, where they spent their remaining years.
