Golden Discs is a large media retailer in Ireland. It has the largest number of outlets of any retailer of its type in Ireland with 30. Its main competitors are HMV and previously Virgin Megastores, but after closing many of its outlets, Virgin is no longer seen as a significant threat. Its outlets, however, are significantly smaller than those of HMV. It would also be reasonable to count Tesco as a competitor due to their value for items in the chart, however Tesco does not specialise in the same items as Golden Discs/HMV, and does not have sales or other similar promotions on these items. It currently sell CDs, DVDs, PS2 games and consoles. It formerly stocked VHS but this was phased out, however sometimes they still sell small stocks of select films at very cheap prices (often as low as €1.99) but these are most likely agreements with distributors to help clear out old VHS stock. It is also beginning to sell Xbox and Xbox 360 games in some outlets, but there is no sign of selling those consoles.
