The Gold Coast Rollers were an Australian basketball team, that played in Gold Coast, Queensland, in the National Basketball League. The team was originally named the Gold Coast Cougars before being renamed the Rollers in 1992. The team was one of only two teams from the state of Queensland during its tenure (currently there are three with a fourth confirmed for the 2007/2008 season). The Rollers were one of three teams (the Geelong Supercats and the Hobart Devils being the other two) that had their NBL licenses revoked by the league directors in 1996 due to financial difficulties. While not the first time teams had folded in the league, the sudden departure of the Devils, Supercats and Rollers signified that the NBL's successful era (between late 1980s and early 1990s) was truly over.
Since the departure of the Rollers in 1996, reports have surfaced regarding a new Gold Coast team entering the league [1]. However, the NBL was concerned over the financial security of any such venture. On November 21, 2006, the NBL confirmed that a new Gold Coast based team will join the league in 2007/08, thanks to the work of former Rollers coach David Claxton [2]. It is highly unlikely that this new team will compete under the "Rollers" moniker.
Only one player to have played for the Gold Coast Rollers remains in NBL competition today: Ben Castle, who currently plays for the Wollongong Hawks.
