Godfried, Duke of Friesland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Godfried, King of the Sea was the Danish Viking leader of most of Friesland between 880 and 885 and a compatriate of Rorik. He converted to Christianity and was appointed as duke of Friesland by the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles the Fat. He did nothing against a Danish Viking raid which pillaged large parts of the Low Countries. In 885, he was summoned to Lobith for a meeting. In an act of treachery he was killed by a group of Frisian nobles. The West Frisian count Gerulf took over the West Frisian coastline from the Danish after the murder.
