Gobardanga is a city and a municipality in North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is one of the oldest municipality of West Bengal. Go means 'Earth', Bar means 'Greatest' and Danga means 'Place'.

It has strong historic background from the pre-independence era, i.e. jamindar bari, oxebow lake, site of probably the first widow marriage in India.[citation needed]

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Gobardanga had a population of 41,618. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Gobardanga has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 75%. In Gobardanga, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

There are several renowned schools in this town. Gobardanga Khantura High School (1856) is one of the oldest high schools in India[citation needed]. It has a College named Gobardanga Hindu College along with Hostel.
