Goatstown

Goatstown (Baile na nGabhar in Irish) is a suburb of Dublin in the northern administrative county(Dublin 14) of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown in Ireland. It is primarily a residential area, extensively developed principally from the middle decades of the 20th Century onwards. It is roughly centred on the Goat Grill (known as "Dublin's Sporting Pub"), a pub at the intersection of Goatstown Road and Taney Road. There has been a pub there since the early 18th century. Mr Charlie Chawke took over the pub in 1982 and changed the name from Traynor's to the Goat Grill. Tragically he was shot in the leg during an October 2003 robbery and had to have his right leg amputated five days later.

University College Dublin's Belfield campus is to the north. The Irish Glass Bottle's (IGB) Clubhouse is situated on the Goatstown Road, although it is closed and awaiting planning permission to be built upon, a short distance from Joe's chipper which is no longer open.

Goatstown got its name from the fact that goats were bred there producing milk considered to be excellent for those suffering from tuberculosis ^{[citation needed]}.

To the west is Dundrum (Dún Droma), to the east is Mount Merrion (Cnoc Mhuirfean) and Stillorgan (Stigh Lorgan), to the south is Sandyford (Áth an Ghainimh) and to the north is Clonskeagh (Cluain Sceach). The LUAS runs through the south-west corner of Goatstown and the Dundrum Luas stop is nearby with the vehicular entrance off Taney Road. Irish rugby player Brian O'Driscoll resides in the area as well as Irish actor Mr David Kelly. To the east of the Goatstown Road lies the alottments, part of which are presently being built upon (October 2006).
