GNU locate
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
GNU locate is a Unix utility to find files on filesystems. It searches through a prebuilt database of files generated by updatedb and compressed using incremental encoding. It is significantly faster than find, but requires the database to be updated regularly.
It is a part of GNU Findutils.
There is secure version of locate, named slocate:
Secure locate provides a secure way to index and quickly search for files on your system. It uses incremental encoding just like GNU locate to compress its database to make searching faster, but it will also check file permissions and ownership so that users will not see files they do not have access to.
It also can be used to index network filesystems.
