GLS bank

The GLS bank (full name GLS Gemeinschaftsbank) is a bank that was founded in 1974 as an anthroposophical intiative. It was the first bank in Germany that operated with an ethical philosophy. In focus of the bank according to self representation are cultural, social and ecological initiatives, initiated by people, and not anonymous interest seeking capital or maximum profit. The name stands for Gemeinschaftsbank für Leihen und Schenken which translates as Community bank for loans and gifts. The bank is based in Bochum, Germany. In 2005 the bank had a total balance of 550 Million Euros.
