Gloria J. Romero is an American politician. She is currently the Democratic majority leader of the California State Senate.
Romero grew up in Barstow, and earned her associate's degree from Barstow Community College. She went on to a B.A. from California State University, Long Beach and a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of California, Riverside. She has taught as a professor at state universities and served as a trustee and vice president of the board of trustees of Los Angeles City College.
She was elected to the California State Assembly in 1998 and to the Senate in 2001. She also serves on seven committees, including the influential appropriations committee. Romero represents the 24th district, which includes the East Los Angeles communities of El Sereno, Lincoln Heights, City Terrace, Montecito Heights, as well as the San Gabriel Valley cities of Azusa, Baldwin Park, Covina, Duarte, El Monte, City of Industry, Irwindale, La Puente, Monterey Park, Rosemead, South San Gabriel, and West Covina.
In April, 2006, Romero co-authored, with State Senator Gil Cedillo, a resolution to endorse the May 1, 2006 boycott of American businesses to protest H.R. 4437, a House bill to increase the penalties for illegal immigration.[1] The stated aim of the resolution was to educate Americans "about the tremendous contribution immigrants make on a daily basis to our society and economy." Critics of the resolution stated that the boycott did not concern all immigrants, but almost exclusively illegal immigrants. Appearing on CNN in an interview soon after the resolution was introduced, Romero defended her support of the boycott, saying "As a senator, I represent citizens and non-citizens alike." The resolution was passed on April 27, 2006.[2]
