Glenn Whelan (born January 13, 1984) is an Irish football player, currently playing for Sheffield Wednesday, with whom he won promotion to the Championship in May 2005.
Glenn is at home in a role of a midfield playmaker where his assets, such as creativity, great range of passing and fantastic first touch can be used to full effect.
Whelan started his career with Manchester City, making one solitary appearance in the UEFA Cup against Total Network Solutions, before joining Bury on loan in 2003-04. He joined Sheffield Wednesday before the start of the 2004-05 season.
Whelan was voted "man of the match" in the League One play-off final against Hartlepool at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff after scoring the game winning third goal for Wednesday. After Wednesday won promotion to the Championship Whelan was trialed as captain by Paul Sturrock after club captain Bullen was injured.
Despite a difficult first season in the Championship marred by a lack of fitness, Paul Sturrock has told rivals that Whelan is not for sale, viewing him as an integral part of the Owls' future.
He has been capped 14 times by the Irish Under 21s, captaining the side on many of these occasions.
In an interview to the Irish press former Manchester United legend Roy Keane touted Glenn Whelan as player who will fill his shoes.
He represented Republic of Ireland Under-20 team at the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship.
On 12 July 2006 Whelan was placed on the transfer list following increased competition for places in the Wednesday midfield after the arrival of Wade Small, Kenny Lunt and Yoann Folly. [1]
