Gladewater, Texas

Gladewater is a city in Texas, United States. Located mostly in Gregg County, a small portion of the city extends into Upshur County. The population was 6,078 at the 2000 census. The town is probably most famous as a base during Elvis Presley's early career, and also as the town that Johnny Cash wrote 'Walk The Line'.

Gladewater is located at GR1.
(32.542666, -94.946950)According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 31.4 km² (12.1 mi²). 30.1 km² (11.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²) of it (4.37%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 6,078 people, 2,257 households, and 1,593 families residing in the city. The population density was 202.1/km² (523.7/mi²). There were 2,601 housing units at an average density of 86.5/km² (224.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 79.80% White, 16.12% African American, 0.82% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.58% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.50% of the population.
There were 2,257 households out of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 15.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.4% were non-families. 26.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 85.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $28,118, and the median income for a family was $32,278. Males had a median income of $24,770 versus $23,271 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,317. About 15.5% of families and 19.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.9% of those under age 18 and 20.9% of those age 65 or over.
