Gjerdrum is a municipality in the county of Akershus, Norway.
The administrative centre of Gjerdrum is Ask.
[edit] The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Gjerdrum (Norse Gerđarvin). The first element is the genitive case of a rivername Gerđ, the last element is vin f 'meadow, pasture'. The rivername is derived from the Norse word garđr m 'fence' - and the meaning is 'the river which function as a fence (and/or as a border)'.
[edit] Football Team
Gjerdrum Idrettslag (G.I.L) is the name of the local football team. Gjerdrum IL is also used for the municipality's Sports Association ( hence; Idrettslag) as a whole, thus the football team tend to only use the name Gjerdrum. Gjerdrum (IL) has status as an amateur side, and are currently at level 6 (5th Divison) in the Norwegian League System. Cautious optimism is surrounding the team at the moment, as ambitions are rising throughout the football 'department' (G.I.L Fotball) of the Idrettslag.
