Give or Keep
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Give or Keep was a pricing game on the American television game show, The Price Is Right. Lasting from December 27, 1972 to October 22, 1990, it was played for a large prize worth more than $1,000, and used small prizes.
[edit] Gameplay
The contestant was shown three groups of two small prizes. He/she had to pick out the item from each group he/she thought was more expensive (to "keep"), and "give" the other one back.
As the contestant selected prizes, a running total of the rejected items was tallied. Once the final total was revealed, host Bob Barker revealed the prices of the items in the "keep" column, and a running total was tallied.
If the cumulative total of the "keep" prizes was higher than or equal to that of the "give" items, the contestant won. Regardless of the outcome, the contestant kept any prizes he/she selected.
[edit] Trivia
- The Give or Keep gameboard was not situated on the actual turntable. Instead, it sat in the area next to it; the turntable was used for the small prizes. As a result, this game was visible to both the in-studio and home audiences during the one-bid round.
- Give or Keep's rules were used for Finish Line, an identical game with a more elaborate set that was played concurrent with Give or Keep during the 1978-1979 season.
- It was impossible for a contestant to walk away from Give or Keep empty-handed, as he or she would automatically win the three "kept" small prizes.
[edit] Retirement
- Give or Keep was the 2nd longest-lived retired pricing game, behind Hit Me. Despite its longevity, the game was retired because many of the show's staff did not really like it.
