[edit] Fiction section

Perhaps there is something I am not understanding but it seems as if this section within the article is just a list of female heroines within popular films and television shows rather than really being significant. I fail to see what about aspect of "Girl Power" these characters have, other than being popular female heroines during the time when the phrase was in use. Furthermore, while the Spice Girls definitely deserve mention, the long list is really unnecessary to the article. Frankly, I think the entire list should be deleted, or at least explained more clearly. If my thinking seems flawed, could someone please explain 1) what important information this list contributes (see WP:LIST) and 2) why these are specific examples of Girl Power, other than all being female and a part of pop culture (I would be content with justifying some and deleting the rest, as well). [edit] Origins

Coined by the Spice Girls [citation needed]

[edit] Sports and entertainment section

I am removing some of these, which don't seem to fit as "girl power" at all. I'm taking out Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Jennifer Lopez, Ashlee Simpson. Every female celebrity or sports figure in existence does not necessarily fit this "girl power" description, and these certainly didn't. Probably some of the others should be removed, but some I haven't heard of and don't know if they apply. --Xyzzyplugh 14:38, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

And I just also took out the Wikiproject Gender Studies tag, which placed this talk page in a category where it didn't belong and introduced a template. This should possibly go on the main article page, but not on the talk page. --Xyzzyplugh 14:39, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
I put the Wikigender Studies tag back on the talk page since this is traditionally where it is placed. Placing it in the article looks odd. The long list of sources in the main article contain many articles and books written by feminist scholars related to issues in the main article. -Classicfilms 02:07, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Criticism

I think there should be a criticism section, though I'm not informed enough to write it. The most common view among the people I know is that "Girl Power" is a joke and is actually harmful to feminism. I don't think that view is uncommon.--24.190.122.122 15:13, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

You make a good point which would be supported by many of the articles and books listed on the main page. If you would like to begin a criticism section, these sources are a good place to begin. -Classicfilms 02:10, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

girls have the same ability as boys so dont think girls are looser
