Giovanni Battista, was a common Italian name (see Battista) in the 16th-18th centuries, which in English means "John the Baptist". A very common nickname for this name was Giambattista, Gianbattista or Giovambattista. The Genoese nickname was Baciccio, and a common shortening was Giovan Battista or simply G.B..
