Rear Admiral Ginias Saharin was a character in the anime OVA Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team. (Japanese Voice: Sho Hayami, English Voice: Lex Lang)

[edit] Story

The eldest child of the Saharins, an influential upper-class Zeon family, Ginias was charged by the Sovereign Degwin Sodo Zabi to build a mobile weapon powerful enough to destroy the Earth Federation Forces military headquarters of Jaburo. Granted a secret military facility hidden inside of a mountain on the Tibetan plateau, Ginias began work on his dream project, the Apsalus mobile armor. However, Ginias was not given total operating freedom. Ginias was placed under the jurisdiction of Admiral Yuri Kellarny. Although Ginias used to be friends with Yuri, Ginias began to harbor a secret hatred of him because of his nonchalance and carefree attitude, especially towards the Apsalus project, which Yuri viewed as a mere tool to be used by real soldiers.

Ginias had a younger sister, Aina Saharin. The two siblings were always close and Ginias often pulled strings to have Aina assigned as the test pilot of his experimental units. Ginias also suffered from an unspecified medical ailment, for which he had to take an unspecified medication. His sister would always remind him to take it if it slipped his mind. Given his behaviour during the latter parts of the series, there is a distinct possibility that the medicines were in fact antipsychotics, and that said ailment was paranoid schizophrenia.

After the Zeon lost Operation Odessa the Apsalus Project was ordered to be canceled. But Ginias still had work on the project continue, drugging the mechanics and researchers so they could work more frequently. Ginias began to see people as mere tools to be used to achieve his dream, the completion of the Apsalus, and he stopped taking his own medication, leading to detrimental effects on both his body and mind. Ginias' obsession with the Apsalus would prove to be his downfall. After murdering Admiral Kellarny to keep him from discovering his continued work, Ginias then murders the entire Apsalus development team so the newly completed Apsalus III would be his, and his alone.

Ginias and Aina go out in the Apsalus III to confront the Earth Federation Forces who had discovered the mountain research facility, but when Aina finally voices her objections to Ginias' underhanded tactics he shoots her, throwing her out of the Apsalus III's cockpit and nearly killing her. Through the combined efforts of Aina and Federation pilot Shiro Amada they are able to bring an end to Ginias' madness, crushing the cockpit of the Apsalus III with the fist of Shiro's Gundam Ez8, killing Ginias and destroying the monstrous Apsalus III.
