Gimry

Gimri is a small village in the mountains of Dagestan, a republic within the Russian federation. It has for centuries been a symbol of resistance to Russian expansion in the Caucasus.

The village is the birthplace of Imam Shamil, the third Imam of Dagestan, who led the Caucasian peoples against the Tsarist empire in the 19th century.

The people of Gimri are deeply consevative and have been accused of practising "Wahhabism" by the Russian government.

At the beginning of 2006 there was a fierce battle between a group of militants and over 3,000 Russian soldiers. The militant group are thought to have escaped the encirclement.
