GILSON PERANZZETTA
In a brilliant career, this boy from a poor suburb of Rio de Janeiro rose quickly to play for audiences in the United States, Europe and Japan. Mentioned by Quincy Jones as one of the best arrangers in the world, he is also considered one of today's leading pianists and his compositions have been recorded by Sara Vaughn, Toots Thielemans, Shirley Horne, George Benson, Diane Reeves, Diane Schuur, Ivan Lins, Nana Caymmi, Leny Andrade, Leila Pinheiro and others.
He has won the Brahma Trophy twice, as best instrumentalist in 1988 and best arranger in 1989, as well as three Sharp Music Awards, as best arranger in 1989 and best composer and best interpreter in 1998.
His discography includes 37 solo CDs released on a variety of labels. Feeling a need to administer his own work, Peranzzetta launched his own label, Marari Discos, which made its debut with a release of his own, the CD Rua Marari (Marari Street). This is the original sound track to the documentary Everest - Uma Conquista Brasileira (Everest – A Brazilian Conquest) directed by Valdemar Niclevicz. The film narrates the adventure and triumph of two Brazilian climbers, Valdemar Niclevicz and Mozart Catão, who reached the summit of Everest. December 2000 saw a second release, Canção da Lua (Moonsong), followed in May 2001 by the solo piano Metamorfose (Metamorphosis) and in November 2001 by the choro collection Pingolé. The next release, Cristal (Crystal), a CD of ballads, is due in March 2002 and the sixth CD Frente a Frente (Face to Face) was launched November 2003. The seventh “Manhã de Carnaval” and the eighth “Extra de Vários” were launched August 2005.
Gilson plays constantly in Japan, the United States and Europe. In Japan, he recorded the CD "Reflections" in a duo with guitarist Sebastião Tapajós for JVC. On the Fifth Centennial of Madrid, he shared the stage with leading pianists Tete Montoliu (Spain) and Emilio de La Peña (Argentina), in the anthological show Três Pianos de Cauda (Three Grand Pianos).
To date, Peranzzetta's compositions number 150, ranging over practically all genres of Brazilian popular music: samba, choro, valsa, canção, toada, frevo, baião. As author and performer of piano concerto music, Gilson composed the suite Miragem (Mirage) for symphony orchestra and piano, which was first performed by the Jazz Sinfônica de São Paulo, with Gilson as soloist during Guiomar Novaes Week in 1997 and the suite Metamorfose (Metamorphosis) also for piano and orchestra, which premièred in 2002 at the V III International Violoncello Encounter, witn Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira – OSB and Peranzzetta as soloist, at Sala Cecilia Meireles in Rio de Janeiro. Enamoured of the sonority of the violoncello, he has been working with the Rio Cello Ensemble since 1993. The results have been recorded for the Albatroz label on the CD Sorrir (Smile), whose debut live performance at the Cecília Meireles Hall was highly praised by music critics. In 1999, he was invited by the Villa-Lobos Quintet to join them in a series of concerts, which resulted in the Villa-Lobos Quintet CDs Fronteiras (Frontiers) and Convida (Invitation), released on the RioArte Digital label.
The composition Setembro (Setember), written in partnership with Ivan Lins, was chosen as the theme music for the film Boyz'N the Hood, and Love Dance was used in the "Dallas" series. His Sorriso de Luz (Smile of Light) was the theme to the mini-series Labirinto.
In April 2002, Peranzzetta did a tour in Europe and conducted and arranged for a programme and two CDs of Brazilian music for WDR BIG BAND in Cologne - Germany. In June 2004 Peranzzetta performed again with WDR Big-Band as conductor, arranger and soloist and did another tour in Europe.
In August 2005, Peranzzetta launched a new CD, with his trio, called Manhã de Carnaval with Brazilian standards, with Ivan Lins, Joyce and Wanda Sá as special guests. “Manhã” de Carnaval was also launched in Argentina and Spain.

Gilson Peranzzetta performs solo, in a trio, in a quintet, in duos with Mauro Senise or David Chew, with the Villa-Lobos Quintet, with the Rio Cello Ensemble and with orchestras, as guest soloist or conductor. He also gives workshops in interpretation, arrangement and composition.
