Gilbert Byron

Gilbert V. Byron
know as "the voice of the Chesapeake" was born in Chestertown, Maryland on July 12, 1903. Called "the Chesapeake Thoreau" is known for his many poems detailing life on the Chesapeake Bay at the beginning of the 20 century. During his life, Byron had 14 books and over 70 short stories, poems, and articules published. His books and poems, including The Lord's Oyster, Done Crabbin', and These Chesapeake Men, make up what is likely the largest collection of written works on the Chesapeake Bay authored by one person. Sharing the same birthday with Henry David Thoreau of Walden Pond. The Gilbert Bryon society was founded in 1991 to cultvate an awareness and appreciation of literature and the environment through the works and legacy of Gilbert Bryon. The Society is a subcommitteee of the Pickering Creek Audubon center-www.pickeringcreek.org.
