Gesture drawing

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gesture drawing is the process of drawing three elements of a model or subject in a pose. Gesture consists of depicting angle, proportion and perspective as one effect: gesture. Capturing an exact gesture may require many hours of drawing from a model. Only after developing and defining a gesture may an artist continue creating a realistic contour, and later a drawing that depicts form and structure. Gesture is often misunderstood as only a brief drawing. A gesture is not only a brief exercise for an artist but also an opportunity to prepare for subsequent work. In fact, amateurs often are unaware of its true meaning when ignorant of a high standard of quality in figure drawing.

Gesture is achieved by the combined effect of harmonizing angle, perspective and proportion. Each component cannot exist with out the other if a figure is to be depicted as being realistic and complete.
