From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
German troops parade through Warsaw, Poland on October 5, 1939. The Wehrmacht was marching before a tribune on Aleje Ujazdowskie on which Adolf Hitler and other German officials stood. The parade was photographed and filmed by Leni Riefenstahl.
During the parade all inhabitants of Warsaw were ordered to stay at home and shut their windows. In order to prevent an assassination attempt, the Germans held 412 civilians as hostages. Among them were the most notable professors of the Warsaw University and civilian authorities of the city with its president Stefan Starzyński.
