Gerry Byrne, sworn in as a member of the PC at the age of 35, Byrne has been a MP in Canada since 1996 when, at the age of 29 he successfully ran, and won, in a byelection in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Byrne received a BSc from Dalhousie University and was (born September 27, 1966 at Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Byrne is a member of the Liberal Party of Canada in the Canadian House of Commons, representing the riding of Humber—St. Barbe—Baie Verte since 1996. He was formerly Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and has been re-elected in five consecuate elections. Gerry Byrne retained his seat for another mandate on January 23rd, 2006 with one of the highest margins of victory in Atlantic Canada.
In the upcoming leadership race for the Liberal Party of Canada Byrne is supporting Michael Ignatieff, who is seen as a front runner in the race.
