From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerrit Achterberg (1905-1962) was a Dutch poet. He was born in Langbroek. His early poetry concerned a desire to be united with a beloved in death. In 1937 he shot and killed his landlady and he subsequently spent six years in a psychiatric hospital. His most famous work is the sonnet sequence De ballade van de gasfitter (1953; English translation, A Tourist Does Golgotha, 1972).
