The German Academy of Sciences Berlin was the most important academy in the GDR. It was founded in 1946 and continued the long tradition of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. Its successor in 1990 was the Leibniz Society.

The German Academy of Sciences Berlin was the successor of the Brandenburg Society of Sciences, which was founded by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.
