Gerardo Matos Rodríguez

Gerardo Hernán Matos Rodríguez (March 28, 1897 - April 25, 1948), also known as Becho, was a Uruguayan musician, composer and journalist. He is best known for the tango La Cumparsita, perhaps the most famous and recognizable tango of all time, composed as a young student in 1919. However he was at first too shy to play the piece himself, and it only became known through the performance of others.

Rodríguez was born, and died, in the city of in Montevideo. He travelled widely throughout Europe, and was for a time based in Paris.
