Gepard class fast attack craft
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Type 143A Gepard class is Germany's last class of missile bearing Fast Attack Craft (FPB, Schnellboot in German) and the only one still in service with the Deutsche Marine (German Navy since 1990).
It's an evolution of the Type 143 Albatros class. It's planned that Gepard class vessels will gradually be supplemented by Braunschweig class corvettes starting in 2007.

The boats are named after felines and other mammal predators. The "S" and the number are part of the names! The full name e.g. is "S 71 Gepard". After comissioning the boats, the first names were "S 71" etc. The crews voted for full names with animals. The decision was the combination of the first names together with the animal names!
Since the first of July 2006 all boats belong to the 7. Schnellbootgeschwader (7th Fast Patrol Boat Squadron). From 1998 to 2006 S 76—S 80 belong to 2. Schnellbootgeschwader (2. Fast Patrol Boat Squadron), and S 71—S 75 to the 7. Schnellbootgeschwader. Both squadrons were stationed in Warnemünde.
