Talk:Georgetown

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This page will need disambiguation. Danny

You're right. I didn't know how to label it -- should it be Georgetown, Guyana? Or should we leave this here and create a new Georgetown, Guyana page? -- Zoe

Not sure. I think this is Maverick's call. Nice work on the capitals. Danny

Uh Oh! Just have to say that I am not an authority figure here -- I just happen to be rather opinionated in these matters and give them a great deal of thought (too much thought sometimes). With that said... It looks like Georgetown is a good candidate for full disambiguation. Just a quick look on Google turned up: Georgetown, Texas, Georgetown, Colorado, Georgetown, Delaware, and Georgetown, Kentucky. Of course the famous University by the same name also showed up, but I would put that in a "See also" section at the bottom since "Georgetown" is only part of the university's name. --maveric149

[edit] Georgetown Guyana

Insert non-formatted text hereShouldn't Georgetown, Guyana and (Georgetown in those other places) be listed first in this disambiguation seeing it is the capital of a country and there for highly important? I was going to change it, but then i thought i'd ask on the talk page first. Kyle sb 10:34, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Redirect to Georgetown University

The overwhelming number of searches and information pertaining to "Georgetown" are in regards to the university. All of the other entries are very minor with respect to the university. I think it's in the best interest of the Eikipedia, and most helpful to its users to redirect them to the page that they are almost surely looking for, rather than to have them scan through the long listings to the very bottom of the page to find Georgetown University. And if somebody was in fact, looking for a another Georgetown entry and searched "georgetown," the top of the university page has a disambiguation page -- this is all the standard practice at Wikipedia. In fact, there are very few (less than 20) links direct to Georgetown, and a number of those are not fromt eh article namespace, so might be discussions like this. I'd be very surprised if there should be many links in Wikipedia to Georgetown that mean the Washington university and would not read better in the text as Georgetown University (even if it's a piped link, the tooltip is helpful). Remember the purpose of disambiguation pages is to help editors and authors find hte page they meant. Do you have citable proof that most searches for "Georgetown" mean a university in the USA, not a town or city? I intend to disambig any remaining links to Georgetown and revert the redirect tonight. If you are not satisfied, I suggest listing the page at Wikipedia:Requested moves. When you need to move pages, please use the move link to preserve the edit history, rather than cut-and-paste. For more info see Help:Moving a page. --Scott Davis Talk 08:56, 6 June 2006 (UTC) and 09:49, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Processed what links here

I have gone through the list that links here, and disambiguated the ones I can. The results were:

I'll change it back to the disambiguation page now as a Generic topic. --Scott Davis Talk 11:04, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Processed new incoming links. The new links to this dab page of the last six weeks clearly favour Georgetown, Washington, D.C. and George Town, Penang as the two places most commonly mislinked to the dab page.

I have not attempted to collect stats on how many links are correctly dabbed. --Scott Davis Talk 03:56, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Disambiguation

This page has been a disambiguation page for almost four years! Recently, I have reverted three attempts by newly-registerd users to convert it to a redirect to Georgetown University. Right now, these three users have a total of only eleven edits between them. They are:

If there is consensus among experienced editors for this change, please discuss it here. --Scott Davis Talk 11:30, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

I would oppose this as there are multiple "Georgetowns", two are capital cities of countries. Why should a university be given absolute priority. Georgetown is very vague, most people searching for it in any encyclopedia would expect to find a form of disambiguation. Kyle sb 12:35, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
