To be translated: 1876 promovierte er in Leipzig mit einer sinologischen Arbeit. 1878 wurde er außerordentlicher Professor an der Universität Leipzig auf dem von ihm angeregten neuen Lehrstuhl für ostasiatische Sprachen, dem ersten in Deutschland. Sein wichtigstes Werk erschien 1881, die Chinesische Grammatik, die 1953 unverändert neu aufgelegt wurde. 1889 wurde er ordentlicher Professor für ostasiatische Sprachen und allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft in Berlin. 1891 erschien sein Werk Die Sprachwissenschaft, ihre Aufgaben, Methoden und bisherigen Ergebnisse. Hier legte er unter anderem die Theorie des Zyklischen Sprachwandels dar.
