George Spencer-Churchill, 6th Duke of Marlborough

George Spencer-Churchill, 6th Duke of Marlborough DCL (December 27, 1793 – July 1, 1857) was the son of George Spencer-Churchill, 5th Duke of Marlborough and Lady Susan Stewart.
He was born at Bill Hill, an estate in Hurst in Berkshire which his father was renting at the time. He was educated between 1805 and 1811 at Eton College and later at Christ Church, Oxford. He was also given an honorary Doctorate of Civil Laws from Oxford University on 15 June 1841. He was M.P. (Conservative) for Chippenham between 1818 and 1820 and M.P. (Conservative) for Woodstock from 1826 to 1835 and 1838 to 1840. He also held the office of Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire between 1842 and 1857.
The Duke of Marlborough married, firstly, Lady Jane Stewart, daughter of George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway, on 13 January 1819. They had four children:
- Lady Louisa Spencer-Churchill (c. 1820–1882), married Hon. Robert Spencer, son of Francis Spencer, 1st Baron Churchill of Whichwood and had issue.
- Sir John Winston Spencer-Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough (1822–1883)
- Lord Alfred Spencer-Churchill (1824–1893), married Hon. Harriet Gough-Calthorpe, daughter of Frederick Gough-Calthorpe, 4th Baron Calthorpe and had issue.
- Lord Alan Spencer-Churchill b. 25 July 1825, d. 18 April 1873, married Rosalind Dowker.
He married, secondly, Hon. Charlotte Augusta Flower, daughter of Henry Flower, 4th Viscount Ashbrook, on 10 June 1846. They had two children:
- Lord Almeric Athelstan Spencer-Churchill b. 1847, d. 12 December 1856, died young.
- Lady Clementina Augusta Spencer-Churchill+ b. 4 May 1848, d. 27 March 1886, married John Pratt, 3rd Viscount Camden and had issue.
He married, thirdly, Jane Francis Clinton Stewart, granddaughter of John Stewart, 7th Earl of Galloway, on 18 October 1851. They had one child:
- Lord Edward Spencer-Churchill+ b. 28 March 1853, d. 5 May 1911, married Augusta Warbuton, daughter of Elizabeth Hanbury, Baroness Northwick and had issue.
The duke died in 1857, aged 63 at his home of Blenheim Palace.
